  1. When you read on your rock gardening book "mulch your plants with one inch of pea shingles, grit, or stone chippings", do not think this is too much. It isn't. A more shallow layer of mulching will not be enough for effective weeds control (drainage is not a problem in my area). Do not take this lightly: in my experience, weeds are the most dangerous enemies of your rock garden.
