[PPL-devel] ppl 0.9 make check failures on i686-apple-darwin9

   I also tried upgrading my fink gmp packages to the latest
4.2.3 release built with -fexceptions. Neither change eliminated
the five test case failures for ppl on i686-apple-darwin9.
